The Weathercock
Olav H. Hauge (1908 - 1994)

The smith beat him
with tail and comb,
up he went,
the world was new
and the winds many.
He was keen,
wheeled, cawed,
puffed his feathers
at each gust,
in storms stood erect
with his long neck -
Till he rusted
and stuck, standing
skewed to the north.
From where most often
the winds come.
